ベトナム戦争期に東南アジアで死亡し、身元不明のままアーリントン国立墓地へ埋葬された米軍人を、同戦争で犠牲となったすべての軍人の象徴として顕彰した受章です。1984年5月28日の埋葬式典で授与されました。その後、遺骨は空軍中尉マイケル・J・ブラッシーと特定され家族へ返還されましたが、勲章はベトナム戦争の戦没者・行方不明者全体への象徴的顕彰としてアーリントン国立墓地に残されています。

AN ACT TO authorize the President to award the Medal of Honor to the unknown American who lost his life while serving overseas in the Armed Forces of the United States in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam Era and has been selected to be buried in the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery. Approved May 25, 1984, Public Law 98-301, Ninety-eighth Congress.
